Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cougars start weekend with 4-1 win over Manitoba

QUICKLY
Three unanswered third-period goals helped give the University of Regina's men's hockey team a 4-1 win over Manitoba on Friday at The Co-operators Centre.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first period it looked as though the teams might extend the goalless drought another full stanza, but the two teams combined for two goals in the final 2:05 of the second.
  • Kade Runke opened the scoring at 17:55 of the second with a Jayden Davis tripping penalty about to expire. Eric Pearce slipped a pass to Runke on a 2-on-1 and Runke fired it under Manitoba goalie Kolby Thornton's glove for his third of the season, but the lead didn't last long. Jonny Hooker scored for the Bisons with just 28 seconds to go, scoring from a sharp angle following a rebound from a Colton Veloso shot.
  • Kolton Shindle got what turned out to be the game-winning goal two minutes into the third. Carson Sass passed to an unchecked Shindle from behind the net and the one-timer beat Thornton for his first of the campaign.
  • Logan Barlage extended the lead to 3-1 after a goalmouth scramble late in the third, then Jayden Davis ended any hope of a miracle Manitoba comeback after scoring a long-distance empty netter from 175 feet away.

NOTES
  • Shindle now has two career goals for the Cougars, both of which were game winners.
  • The Cougars peppered Thornton all night, finishing with a 45-25 advantage in shots.
  • Adam Evanoff stopped 24 of Manitoba's 25 shots to notch his second win of the season.

NEXT UP
The two teams will finish off the weekend series on Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre. Game time is set for 5:00 PM.
