Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Cougars earn split with 3-2 comeback win over Bisons

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's hockey team shook off an early two-goal deficit to win 3-2 over Manitoba on Friday night in Winnipeg.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Manitoba opened the scoring with two goals in just over two minutes in the early stages of the first. Ashley Keller scored on the power play at 3:01, then Sarah Dennehy scored at 5:23 to put the Bisons up 2-0.
  • The Cougars started the comeback just 30 seconds into the second period when captain Jenna Merk scored on the power play to notch her first of the season. And the power play worked again later in the frame as Makena Kushniruk notched her team-leading fifth goal of the season to tie it up at 2-2 with five minutes to go in the middle stanza.
  • Merk scored the winner with just under six minutes to go in regulation. She had her initial shot blocked, but followed up on the rebound and knocked it home from the slot to collect her third career game-winning goal.

NOTES
  • Arden Kliewer was busy in the win, stopping 36 of Manitoba's 38 shots to notch her fourth win in her last five games.
  • The Cougars were 2-for-5 on the power play while Manitoba was 1-for-6.
  • Both teams now have identical 4-7-1 records as they're tied in the Canada West standings for sixth place with nine points apiece.

NEXT UP
With the rare Thursday/Friday series now complete, the Cougars will return to a more standard schedule. They'll host Alberta next Friday and Saturday at The Co-operators Centre.
