Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cougars battle No. 8 Alberta tough, but fall 4-2 to Golden Bears

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's men's hockey team lost 4-2 to No. 6-ranked Alberta on Saturday night in Edmonton.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars opened the scoring under three minutes into the game on what was Carson Whyte's first Canada West goal. Austin King-Cunningham cleared the puck high off the glass from his own end, and Whyte was able to poke it away from a U of A defenceman before beating Golden Bears goalie Matt Berlin.
  • Alberta replied with even-strength goals by Adam Hall and Mason Ward which gave the home side a 2-1 lead through 20 minutes.
  • Jackson Doucet tied up the game early in the second with his second goal of the weekend and his third of the season. With the Cougars killing off a minor, Doucet picked off an Alberta pass and had a breakaway from his own blue line. He went five-hole on Berlin to notch his second career shorthanded goal.
  • Eric Florchuk scored what would turn out to be the game-winning goal just past the midway mark of the second, and Hall's second of the game added some insurance for Alberta eight minutes into the third.

NOTES
  • The Cougars outshot Alberta by a 35-26 margin in Saturday's game.
  • King-Cunningham's assist on Whyte's goal gave the third-year defenceman his first point of the season.
  • Adam Evanoff got the start for the Cougars in net and made 22 saves.
  • The Cougars now sit three points behind their next opponent, MacEwan, for the final Canada West playoff spot with both teams at the midway point of the 28-game conference schedule.

NEXT UP
The Cougars will host MacEwan next weekend at The Co-operators Centre. Start time is set for 7:00 PM on Friday and for 5:00 PM on Saturday.
