Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

MacEwan takes 2-0 win over Cougars in weekend opener

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's men's hockey team was held off the scoresheet on Friday night as MacEwan took a 2-0 victory over the Cougars at The Co-operators Centre.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams played a scoreless opening 20 minutes, then followed that up with another scoreless frame in the second despite three power play opportunities for both teams in the opening two periods.
  • MacEwan scored what was not only the game's opening goal, but also the game-winning goal just 11 seconds into the third. Carter Chorney took advantage of a turnover inside the U of R zone and scored with a wrist shot blocker side from the slot.
  • The Cougars pulled their goalie for the extra man with over two minutes remaining and peppered MacEwan's Ashton Abel with six shots in that time, but weren't able to find the equalizer.
  • MacEwan's Sam Simard added an empty net goal as time expired to make the final score 2-0.

NOTES
  • Regina held a 32-25 advantage in shots, but Abel turned aside all 32 to notch his second shutout of the season.
  • MacEwan now has a five-point cushion over Regina for sixth in the Canada West standings.

NEXT UP
The Cougars and the Griffins will meet again on Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre. Game time is set for 5:00 PM.
