Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Cougars pile up the offence in 5-1 win over MacEwan

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's hockey team turned on the offence on Friday night in a 5-1 win over MacEwan in Edmonton.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Kaitlyn Gilroy got the Cougars on the board in the first period with a shot from the slot following a rush by Lauren Focht.
  • Regina added to the lead just a couple of minutes later with the Cougars on the power play. Olivia Leggett scored her first of the season on a hard shot from the high slot that beat MacEwan's goalie to the blocker side.
  • Paige Hubbard added to the lead early in the second period after taking advantage of a MacEwan miscue at Regina's blue line. Hubbard had a clean breakaway and took a shot that was saved, but the puck squeaked through the goalie and Hubbard was able to tap in her fifth goal of the season.
  • Kaylee Dyer's deke to the backhand on a breakaway gave the Cougars another one late in the second, giving the visitors a 4-0 lead through 40 minutes.
  • MacEwan got on the board with a Maria Ayre goal in the third, but couldn't solve Natalie Williamson again and Jadyn Kushniruk added another power play goal for the Cougars on a wild goalmouth scramble in the late going.

NOTES
  • Williamson stopped 31 of MacEwan's 32 shots on Friday to earn her first victory of the season.
  • The Cougars won the special teams battle convincingly, scoring a pair of power play markers on their five opportunities and killing off all eight of MacEwan's power plays.
