Cougars settle for three-point weekend after shootout loss to MacEwan

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's hockey team settled for a three-point weekend after a 3-2 shootout loss to MacEwan on Saturday in Edmonton.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars scored just 28 seconds into the game. Rachel O'Toole fired a low shot from the point which was deflected in by Kaylee Dyer for her second goal of the season.
  • Regina extended the lead later in the first on another deflection. This time it was Hannah Pennell's point shot which was tipped in by Jenna Merk, giving the Cougars a 2-0 advantage.
  • The Cougars led 2-0 through 20 minutes and it looked as though they might take that same lead into the third, but MacEwan's Jesse Jack scored with just 29 seconds remaining in the middle stanze.
  • Despite Regina's 21-3 advantage in shots in the third, MacEwan got the game-tying goal with just under five minutes to go in regulation. Maria Ayre chipped it off a Regina defender, then walked in from the right and went five-hole to tie it up.
  • After five minutes of 3-on-3 overtime solved nothing, the teams went to a shootout. The goalies stood strong as Regina's Arden Kliewer and MacEwan's Lindsey Johnson stopped everything through five rounds, but in the sixth round Allee Isley scored the winner for the Griffins.

NOTES
  • Dyer's goal ties the mark for the fastest goal to start a Canada West game this season.
  • Regina was 0-for-3 on the power play, though Merk's goal came just seconds after the expiration of a MacEwan minor. The Cougars killed off MacEwan's lone power play opportunity.
  • The Cougars outshot MacEwan by a 37-22 margin.

NEXT UP
The Cougars will close out the first half of the Canada West schedule at home next weekend to the league-leading UBC Thunderbirds. Game times are set for Friday at 7:00 PM and Saturday at 5:00 PM at The Co-operators Centre.
