QUICKLY
The University of Regina's men's hockey team lost 7-1 to No. 5-ranked UBC on Saturday at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre in Vancouver.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UBC opened the scoring on a tic-tac-toe just over five minutes in with Jack Wismer finishing off the play. The home side followed that up with a power play goal from Sam Huo and an even-strength marker by Sasha Mutala which put the Thunderbirds up 3-0 just over 11 minutes in.
- The Cougars got their only goal of the game on a nice passing play shortly after Mutala's goal. Eric Pearce and Jackson Doucet set up an offensive rush before Pearce slipped a pass over to Jakob Brook for the rookie forward's fifth goal of the season.
- The score stayed 3-1 for UBC through the first intermission, but the second period was all Thunderbirds. Scott Atkinson scored a minute and a half into the middle stanza, then Cyle McNabb and Chris Douglas scored just 31 seconds apart and a late goal by Atkinson put UBC up by a commanding 7-1 score after 40 minutes.
- Regina outshot UBC 15-8 in the third, but the Cougars were unable to draw any closer to the second-place Thunderbirds.
NOTES
- UBC held a 45-23 advantage in shots on Saturday as Cougar starter Adam Evanoff finished with 38 saves.
- Pearce's assist was his team-leading 11th helper of the season. Pearce is tied with three Cougars, including Brook, for the team high with 5 goals and leads all U of R players with 16 points.
- Both team had just two opportunities on the power play. Regina was 0-for-2 while UBC finished 1-for-2.
