Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars clinch top-two seed with road win over MacEwan

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's women's basketball team wrapped up a top-two seed in the Canada West postseason with an 89-63 road win over MacEwan on Friday night in Edmonton.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars led Friday's game nearly from wire to wire, answering MacEwan's bucket on the opening possession of the game by scoring the next 21 points. Regina led 30-13 after the opening quarter and 53-20 at the break to cruise to their 16th Canada West win of the season.
  • Jade Belmore and Julia Vydrova both eclipsed the 20-point mark for the Cougars. Belmore finished with 24 points and 9 rebounds, while Vydrova had 22 points and 15 rebounds. Both players chipped in with five assists.
  • Dayna Pearce and Maddy Seida both had 14 points in the victory. Seida's output represented a career high, breaking her old mark of 10 set last year in a win over Brandon.

NOTES
  • The win guarantees Regina at least the No. 2 seed in the Canada West postseason but thanks to Fraser Valley's win over Saskatchewan on Friday, the No. 1 seed is still up for grabs. Regina can claim the No. 1 seed with another win over MacEwan on Saturday coupled with Fraser Valley completing the weekend sweep over Saskatchewan, but any other scenario would see the top seed go to the Huskies.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars will finish off the weekend and the Canada West schedule on Saturday night at MacEwan. Game time between the Cougars and the Griffins is set for 6:00 MT.

PLAYOFF SCHEDULE
  • Regina will host a Canada West play-in game next Friday between the No. 8 and No. 9 seeds if the Cougars earn the top seed, or between the No. 7 and No. 10 seeds if the Cougars end up as the No. 2 seed. The winner of that play-in game will advance to play the Cougars in a Canada West quarterfinal game on Saturday, Feb. 18 at the CKHS.
  • If the Cougars win that quarterfinal game, they will host a semifinal game on Friday, Feb. 24 at the CKHS.
