Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cougars lose to UBC, but wind up with final Canada West postseason berth

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's men's hockey team closed out the Canada West schedule with a 4-1 road loss to UBC on Saturday, but two results on the out-of-town scoreboard helped the Cougars clinch a postseason berth.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jordan Sandhu scored the lone goal of the first period for UBC, then the Thunderbirds got goals from Sam Huo, Chris Douglas and Jake Lee to go up 4-0 through 40 minutes.
  • Jake Fletcher scored Regina's goal on the power play in the third period on a nice shot from the left faceoff dot.

NOTES
  • UBC enjoyed a 50-26 advantage in shots. Regina goalie Adam Evanoff finished with 46 saves on the night.
  • Mike Eskra registered his ninth assist of the season on Fletcher's goal.
  • Both teams finished 1-for-5 on the power play.

POSTSEASON
  • Thanks to losses by both Manitoba and MacEwan, the Cougars claim Canada West's sixth and final playoff berth.
  • Regina will match up with UBC in a best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal series next weekend in Vancouver. Games are scheduled for Friday, Saturday, and (if a third game is needed) Sunday with all start times set for 7:00 PST.
