UBC throws opening punch in quarterfinal series; Game 2 set for Saturday

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's men's hockey team opened up its best-of-three quarterfinal series against UBC with a 7-1 loss to the Thunderbirds on Friday night in Vancouver.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It took just 2:28 for UBC to get on the board with Scott Atkinson's power play goal. Jake Kryski scored six minutes later and the Thunderbirds took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
  • Sasha Mutala added another one for UBC in the second, then the Thunderbirds got goals from Atkinson and Liam Kindree just 1:34 apart to put the home side up 5-0 through 40 minutes.
  • After two more UBC goals in the first half of the third, the Cougars got on the board when rookie Eric Houk roofed a shot from a sharp angle. Matt Culling and Jayden Davis drew the assists on Houk's goal.

NOTES
  • Adam Evanoff got the start in net for the Cougars and stopped 35 of UBC's 42 shots.
  • UBC was 3-for-7 on the power play. Regina finished 0-for-6 with the man advantage.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars will look for a Game 2 win on Saturday to push the series to a third and deciding game on Sunday. Game time is set for 7:00 PM (PST).
