Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cougars defeat UNBC in play-in game; advance to Canada West quarterfinals

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's men's basketball team took out the University of Northern British Columbia by an 88-74 score on Friday in a Canada West play-in game in Victoria.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a tight opening 15 minutes, the Cougars built up a double-digit lead after three different players drilled triples on three consecutive possessions midway through the fourth. The three-pointers by Carter Millar, Nick Barnard, and Brayden Kuski pushed what had been a four-point lead to a 13-point advantage and helped Regina build a 45-30 lead at the half.
  • While the Cougars held onto the double-digit lead for the remainder of the game, UNBC threatened to make it a game after a Fareed Shittu bucket made it 76-66 with just over four minutes to go. But the Cougars scored the next 10 points over the next minute and a bit to build up a 20-point advantage - their largest of the game - and end any hope of a UNBC comeback.

NOTES
  • Millar led the Cougars with 22 points and also had a team-leading 9 rebounds.
  • Four other Cougars hit double figures in scoring including Matt Barnard with 17 points, Nick Barnard with 16 points, and both Kuski and Arinze Emeka-Anyakwo with 12 points.
  • Friday's win marked the first time the two teams have met in the postseason. The Cougars are a perfect 7-0 against UNBC, including six league wins in addition to tonight's play-in victory.

NEXT UP
  • The No. 8-seeded Cougars advance to the Canada West quarterfinals. They'll face top-seeded Victoria on Saturday night with a start time of 7:00 PST.
