Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Cougars fall 25-13, 25-23, 25-23 to Fraser Valley

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's women's volleyball team fell in three sets to the UFV Cascades on Friday night in Abbotsford, B.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first set was won in convincing fashion by Fraser Valley as the home side took it 25-13, but the rest of the match was markedly different.
  • The two teams traded leads four times and were tied a total of nine times in the second set, which saw UFV come back from a 23-22 deficit to score three consecutive points including a kill by Natalie Lemoine-Sells which gave the Cascades a 25-23 victory.
  • The third set saw Fraser Valley bolt out to an 18-9 lead, but the Cougars battled back with a 10-2 run including six consecutive points during a stretch which featured three Bailey Balaberda kills and an extended serving run by Claire Sheppard. That got the Cougars to within one at 20-19 and a couple of big plays by Kaylyn Brown pulled the visitors into a 22-22 tie, but Fraser Valley took three of the next four points to clinch the three-set win.

NOTES
  • Balaberda ended up with a team-high eight kills for Regina and added 10 digs.
  • Annika Hufnagel had 21 assists and a team-high 13 digs, while Baillie Williams got her first start at libero and finished with 9 digs.
  • Friday marked the first-ever match between the two teams. Fraser Valley joined Canada West in women's volleyball in 2021-22, but didn't play Regina last season.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars will close out their 2022-23 season on Saturday night at Fraser Valley. Game time is set for 5:00 PST.
