QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's soccer team battled valiantly on the road against a MacEwan team picked third in the Canada West preseason poll, but a goal deep into injury time gave the Griffins a 3-2 win on Friday afternoon in both teams' conference opener.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lennox Lockhurst scored the first of her two goals just over five minutes into the contest. Kirsten Koellmel forced a turnover in MacEwan's end and slipped a pass over to Lockhurst, who collected the ball and fired it over the opposing keeper to notch the first goal of the Canada West schedule.
- MacEwan tied it up just before the half when Alyx Henderson scored in injury time, finally solving starting keeper Kareena Andersen on what was the Griffins' ninth shot directed at the Regina net. The Griffins continued their strong play early in the second half as Hannah Supina scored five minutes in to put MacEwan up 2-1.
- But Regina responded with a long stretch of extended pressure against a favoured MacEwan side. Lockhurst had multiple quality chances as did Makenna Sackmann and Peyton Enns, and the Cougars were finally rewarded when Lockhurst just beat MacEwan's keeper and defender to a cross from the right and put home a daring left-footer just before all three players collided.
- The Cougars had another brilliant chance in injury time, but Enns curled a shot from near the top of the box just wide to the right.
- Just when it looked as though the Cougars might end up with a well-deserved draw on the road against quality opposition, a long through ball from MacEwan's back line ended up on the foot of Grace Mwasalla, who chipped it over Andersen for the game-winning strike.
NOTES
- The two goals by Lockhurst were the second and third Canada West strikes of her career.
- Delaney Rhinehart was credited with the assist on Lockhurst's second goal.
- Andersen and rookie midfielder Sana Karam both made their Canada West on Friday.
