Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Cougars claw back from early deficit; score 3-1 win over Manitoba

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's soccer team fell behind early, but stormed back for a 3-1 victory over Manitoba on Sunday afternoon at the U of R Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Manitoba opened the scoring in the seventh minute on a rush that began with a Janelle Chomini rush up the right sideline. Chomini passed to Camila Goldsztein, who found Taryn Cabak in a dangerous area and Cabak's left-footed shot to the near post put the Bisons in the lead.
  • The Cougars replied late in the first half when Peyton Enns was fouled inside the area. Allyson Schneider stepped up and buried the penalty kick with a hard, low shot to the left side.
  • Peyton Enns, who had a pair of glorious chances in the opening half, finally broke through in the second. Sana Karam got the ball to Enns and she did the rest, blowing past a Manitoba defender and tucking home her third goal of the season in the 69th minute.
  • The Cougars added to the lead in the 78th minute. Sierra Kolodziej sent a nice ball in from the right and Kirsten Koellmel got her head on it to give the home side some breathing room.

QUOTABLE
"That was an earned win. That was 18 players on the roster committed to getting the job done and getting three points for the team today. It was a total team effort from the back to the front." - Cougars head coach Astrid Baecker

NOTES
  • The victory gives the Cougars (1-1-2) an undefeated string of three consecutive games and pulls Regina into fifth place in the Prairie Division standings.
  • Enns is now all alone in fourth place on the school's all-time scoring list with 11 and needs just 1 more to tie Kyra Vibert for third.
  • Karam's assist was the first of her Canada West career.
  • Regina keeper Kareena Andersen made four saves to lock up the first Canada West victory of her career.

NEXT UP
The homestand continues for the Cougars next weekend as they'll host UBC Okanagan (3-1-1) and Thompson Rivers (2-3-0) on Saturday and Sunday at the U of R Field. Both of those matches will kick off at noon.
