Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Cougars battle to 1-1 draw with UBC Okanagan

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's soccer team came away from Saturday's game with a point after a 1-1 home draw with UBC Okanagan at the U of R Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars opened the scoring late in the first half on a strange one. Kirsten Koellmel tried to connect with Sana Karam on a pass from the end line in the , but the ball was redirected by a UBC Okanagan defender into the net for the only goal of the opening 45 minutes.
  • UBC Okanagan tied it up in the 63rd minute. Eleni Georgacacos had her initial shot saved by Cassidy Fedoruk, but Sophia Pol was there to deflect in the attempted clearance by the Regina back line.
  • The Cougars had a great chance in second half injury time, but Sana Karam's effort from 25 yards out was kept out by a fine save by UBC Okanagan keeper Talia Gagnon.

QUOTABLE
"UBCO asked lots of defensive questions of us today and we were able to problem solve, stay composed, and work together in key moments of the game. We pushed until the final whistle with a never-say-quit attitude and we were almost rewarded when Sana had that late chance." - Cougars head coach Astrid Baecker

NOTES
  • The draw moves Regina's record to 1-1-3 on the season. The Cougars are tied with Manitoba for the fifth and final Prairie Division playoff berth, but have played three fewer games than the Bisons.
  • Not only making her first career start but also appearing in her first ever Canada West match, goalkeeper Cassidy Fedoruk made five saves to help secure the draw for the Cougars.
  • Shots on goal were nearly equal in Saturday's match. UBC Okanagan had seven and the Cougars were credited with six.
  • Miranda Baker, Jessica Merk, and Delaney Rhinehart each played all 90 minutes on Saturday. For Merk, it's the fifth time in five Canada West matches this season that she's played all 90 minutes.

NEXT UP
The Cougars conclude their four-match homestand on Sunday against Thompson Rivers (2-4-0). Kickoff is set for noon at the U of R Field.
