Game Recap: Rams Football |

Second-half comeback lifts Rams to 23-15 win over Calgary

QUICKLY
The University of Regina Rams scored 16 points in the fourth quarter to lift them to a 23-15 victory over Calgary on Saturday afternoon at Mosaic Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Dinos threw the first jab on the final play of the first quarter when Xavier Vaillancourt found Gob Deng for a 74-yard catch-and-run that put the Dinos up 7-1.
  • The Dinos scored again three possessions later as Calgary had its drive extended by a Rams penalty for contacting the kicker, and a 30-yard pass from Vaillancourt to Ben Gagnon increased Calgary's lead to 15-1.
  • But the Rams responded on the next possession on first-year quarterback Owen Sieben's first career drive. Sieben hit D'Sean Mimbs for a 38-yard gain, then found Emmett Steadman for 35 yards on the very next play to get the Rams inside Calgary's 10. Sieben then connected with Bennett Stusek for an 8-yard major to cut Calgary's lead to 15-7.
  • Neither team scored points in the third but with 4:26 left in the quarter, Sieben engineered what would be the longest drive of the game in terms of both yards and time. 13 plays, 91 yards, and 7:28 later the Rams finished off the drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge by Brayden Wagg to get to within one point.
  • After a big stop by the Rams on a third-down situation, Regina took over the ball on Calgary's 41 and a 21-yard pass to D'Sean Mimbs led to an Aldo Galvan 18-yard field goal to put the Rams up 17-15.
  • On Calgary's next possession, Vaillancourt fumbled and the ball was recovered by Regina linebacker Josh White to give the Rams nearly identical field position as the starting point on their last drive. Wagg again finished off the drive with his second one-yard touchdown plunge of the quarter, increasing Regina's lead to 23-15.
  • Galvan's point-after attempt was blocked, leaving the door open for Calgary as it remained a one-score game. Vaillancourt drove the Dinos downfield with some help from Regina penalties, but White led the way for the Rams defence as they stuffed Calgary on 3rd-and-2 from Regina's 50 to seal the win.

NOTES
  • Dressed for his first career game, Sieben finished 13-for-20 and collected 187 passing yards.
  • Marshall Erichsen had the U of R's first triple-digit rushing effort of the season, finishing with 17 carries for a career-high 122 yards.
  • Erichsen also had 30 kickoff return yards and 29 receiving yards, giving him a total of 181 all-purpose yards in the win.
  • Cameron Mah and Josh White both had a team-leading 5.5 tackles for the Rams. White also had a fumble recovery.
  • Justin Mckerracher had his first Canada West interception for the Rams.
  • Five different players had pass breakups for the Rams including Jaxon Fuchs, Chopper Hippe, Max Polischuk, Dolani Robinson, and Jacob Tkachuk.
  • Hippe also had a sack for the Rams.

NEXT UP
The Rams will hit the road next week for a crucial Week 4 clash at Manitoba. They'll meet the Bisons on Saturday afternoon (2:00 CT/1:00 SK).
