QUICKLY
A long touchdown drive late in regulation helped the University of Regina Rams push the game to overtime, but Manitoba prevailed with a field goal on the second extra possession as the Bisons won 27-24 in a Week 4 Canada West matchup at IG Field in Winnipeg.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both offences started slowly, with the only touchdown of the first half for either team coming on a quick drive by the Rams early in the second quarter. Owen Sieben and Olivier Savard connected on a 38-yard catch-and-run to get into Manitoba territory and three plays later, Marshall Erichsen ran it in from 27 yards out to put the Rams up 9-3.
- Manitoba got its first touchdown of the game on a 13-play, 90-yard drive in the third quarter capped by a Jackson Tachinski pass to DeShawn Le Jour, but the Rams responded on the next possession with an even longer touchdown drive. Aided by three Manitoba penalties, the Rams finished off a 5-play, 98-yard drive with a 27-yard pass from Sieben to Rylan Sokul that put the Rams up 16-10 on the final play of the third.
- Two fourth-quarter Manitoba touchdowns put the Bisons up 24-16 but Sieben, in his first U SPORTS start, engineered a game-tying drive. Sieben got a big third-down conversion on a pass to Emmett Steadman, then a 15-yard rush by Savard set up a 21-yard Sieben pass to Bennett Stusek that got the Rams down to Manitoba's 1-yard line. The Rams couldn't punch it in on first down, but reached into their bag of tricks on second down and short-yardage quarterback Brayden Wagg lobbed a pass to offensive lineman Ethan Graham in the end zone. Graham's diving catch gave the Rams the major, and Sieben connected with Erichsen on the two-point conversion to tie it up with 28 seconds to go.
- The Rams survived a 42-yard field goal attempt on the final play of regulation, and also survived a 41-yard field goal try by Manitoba on the last play of the first overtime. On the second overtime possession, Manitoba got a 21-yard Maya Turner field goal but the Rams' attempt at a field goal from 45 yards was left just short as the Bisons escaped with a three-point victory.
NOTES
- Sieben was stellar in his first start, completing 23 of his 37 passes for 294 yards including his touchdown pass to Sokul.
- D'Sean Mimbs tied for the team lead with 5 receptions and led all players with 94 receiving yards.
- After Aldo Galvan was injured in warmups, backup receiver Andrew Sweeney took over all kicking duties for the Rams. Sweeney performed admirably, hitting both of his PATs and unleashing two punts in excess of 40 yards.
- Cameron Mah had a game-high 7.5 tackles and also had one of the Rams' five sacks on the day.
- Evan Eide, Chopper Hippe, Brad Rodin, and Wagg also had sacks for the Rams while Dolani Robinson had three pass breakups.
STANDINGS
