QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's soccer team played to its second draw in as many days on Sunday, tying Thompson Rivers by a 1-1 score in an inter-division Canada West match at the U of R Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The match started out at a breakneck pace, beginning with a wonderful strike from Sierra Kolodziej just over two minutes in. Kolodziej rocketed a shot over her former teammate, TRU keeper Cassandra De Amaral, into the top corner to put the Cougars up early.
- Both teams traded dangerous scoring opportunities in the ensuing moments, and it was Thompson Rivers breaking through after Esi Lufo found Berea Woldeyes in a dangerous spot for her first of the season in the eighth minute.
- The game settled down somewhat after the frantic start as the two teams went into halftime still tied up at 1-1.
- Though the wind favoured Thompson Rivers in the second half, it was the Cougars who had the best chances late. Sana Karam had a pair of chances but left one shot high and had the other opportunity foiled by a nice play by the Thompson Rivers back line. Allyson Schneider unleashed a free kick from just outside the top of the box, but De Amaral dove to her right to make the save.
NOTES
- Schneider collected her second assist of the season on Kolodziej's early goal.
- Kareena Andersen got the start in net for the Cougars and made a pair of saves in the draw.
- Shot attempts were 14-11 for Thompson Rivers. Shots on goal were 6-3 for the Cougars.
- Now 1-1-4 on the season, the Cougars are riding a five-match undefeated string.
- The team's total of four draws on the season is already tied for second most in program history and trails only the 2017 team's record of six. The Cougars were 1-7-6 that season.
