Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cougars drop season opener at Mount Royal

QUICKLY
Kade Runke scored his first Canada West goal, but the University of Regina's men's hockey team lost 5-1 in its season opener on Friday night against Mount Royal in Calgary.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The teams traded late first-period goals, with MRU's Connor Blake scoring with five minutes to go before Runke's goal with just over two minutes left in the opening frame. Runke took advantage of an MRU defensive miscue and wired a backhand to the shelf to tie up the game.
  • But Runke's goal turned out to be the only one of the game for the Cougars. Mount Royal's Spencer Moe scored twice in the second period, then Clayton Hanus added another to put MRU up 4-1 through 40 minutes. Hanus added another goal in the third with Mount Royal on the power play.

NOTES
  • Adam Evanoff got the start in net for the Cougars and stopped 40 of Mount Royal's 45 shots.
  • Regina was 0-for-4 on the power play while Mount Royal was 1-for-3 with the man advantage.

NEXT UP
The Cougars will face Mount Royal again on Saturday night (5:00 PM) before heading back to Regina.
