Game Recap: Rams Football |

Rams fall 46-27 to No. 9 Alberta

QUICKLY
The University of Regina Rams fell by a 46-27 score to the No. 9-ranked Alberta Golden Bears on Friday night in Edmonton.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Rams got off to a great start, with their defence forcing a two-and-out and then embarking on a 9-play, 67-yard drive that finished with short-yardage quarterback Noah Pelletier running it in from a yard out to put the Rams up 7-0.
  • The game swung in Alberta's favour on three huge plays in the span of eight minutes around halftime. A 72-yard run by Matthew Peterson set up Alberta's first major of the game late in the second, then the Golden Bears got a 69-yard pick six from Mack Bannatyne on the ensuing possession to go up 17-7. And on Alberta's first play from scrimmage in the second half, Peterson had a 75-yard touchdown run to give Alberta a commanding 24-8 advantage.
  • Alberta added two more touchdowns and led by as many as 28 points in the fourth quarter. The Rams scored two majors themselves late in the fourth to get within 12, but Alberta's Carter Kettlye returned an onside kick attempt 54 yards to paydirt to end any hope of a miracle Rams comeback.

NOTES
  • D'Sean Mimbs became the first Rams player since 2019 to have 10 receptions in a game, finishing with 10 catches for a season-high 119 yards.
  • Olivier Savard ran 14 times for a career-high 106 yards.
  • Owen Sieben completed 25 of his 36 pass attempts for 266 yards including a touchdown strike to Mimbs.
  • Gowrishan Aravinthan blocked a fourth-quarter field goal attempt, which led directly to one of the Rams' late touchdowns.
  • Jacob Tkachuk had five tackles and was credited with a fumble recovery following Aravinthan's block.

STANDINGS
  • With Alberta, Saskatchewan, and UBC now all sitting at 4-1, that leaves Manitoba (1-3), Regina (1-4), and Calgary (0-4) all battling for the final Canada West playoff spot.
  • Manitoba plays Calgary on Saturday in Winnipeg, and then the Bisons and Rams will rematch in Regina following the bye week in what will be a pivotal game in the race for that last postseason berth.

NEXT UP
The Rams will take next week off with the Thanksgiving bye looming, then will prepare for a huge Week 6 home game against Manitoba on Saturday, Oct. 14.
