Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Big third quarter helps Cougars to Friday win over Mount Royal

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's basketball team used a huge third quarter to pull away from Mount Royal for a 71-52 victory on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Regina opened a double-digit lead in the first quarter, but Mount Royal scored the final seven points to make it a one-possession game heading into the second.
  • Mount Royal took what would be its lone lead of the game midway through the second quarter when a free throw by Harriette MacKenzie made it 23-22, but the Cougars answered immediately with a Dayna Pearce three-pointer and led the rest of the way.
  • The Cougars took a 33-28 lead into halftime, then exploded in the third. They outscored Mount Royal by a 25-7 margin in the quarter, helping turn what had been a close ball game into a comfortable win for the home team.
  • Regina led by 31 at one point during the fourth quarter and settled for a 19-point margin of victory as Mount Royal put some late points on the board long after the outcome had been decided.

NOTES
  • Pearce was 5-for-8 from three-point range and finished with a game-high 19 points.
  • Jade Belmore added 17 points for Regina, while Cara Misskey scored 9 points and led all players with 8 assists.
  • The Cougars improve their Canada West record to 9-4 on the season.
