Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Cougars edged 2-1 by Mount Royal

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's hockey team was edged 2-1 by Mount Royal on Saturday at the Flames Community Arenas in Calgary.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Goals by Julia Duke and Jordyn Hutt put Mount Royal up by two. Duke's goal came off a shot from the slot following a pass from behind the net by Ava Metzger midway through the first, while Hutt was sent in on a partial breakaway and scored on a wrist shot early in the second.
  • The Cougars got on the board later in the period. Jordyn Blais stole the puck behind Mount Royal's net and sent it out front to Raea Gilroy. Gilroy's shot glanced off an MRU defender and in, getting Regina back to within a goal.
  • The two teams played scoreless hockey the rest of the way. Regina pulled goalie Arden Kliewer with a minute and a half remaining and with the Cougars on a power play, but the visitors weren't able to find the game-tying goal with the 6-on-4 advantage.

NOTES
  • Gilroy's goal was her first of the season.
  • Kliewer stopped 32 of Mount Royal's 34 shots.
  • Regina was 0-for-4 on the power play while Mount Royal was 0-for-5.
  • With six games to go in the conference schedule, the Cougars (5-15-2) are three points behind Manitoba for sixth place in the Canada West standings and one point behind Trinity Western.

NEXT UP
The Cougars are back at The Co-operators Centre for the first time in 2024 next weekend. They'll host MacEwan on Friday (7:00 PM) and Saturday (5:00 PM) in what will be a critical late-season series as the Cougars continue to battle for one of the final Canada West postseason berths.
