Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Kushniruk scores twice, Kliewer nabs shutout in 3-0 win over MacEwan

QUICKLY
Makena Kushniruk scored twice and Arden Kliewer pitched a 24-save shutout as the University of Regina's women's hockey team took a 3-0 win over MacEwan on Friday night at The Co-operators Centre.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless opening period which saw the Cougars get the larger share of opportunities, Regina finally broke through close to the midway mark of the second period.
  • With the Cougars serving a four-minute double minor, Kushniruk made a superb individual effort to force a turnover in the MacEwan zone and then fire a backhander past Griffins goalie Brianna Sank.
  • The Cougars extended their lead early in the third while on the power play when Paige Hubbard found Kaylee Dyer alone in front of the net. Dyer's initial shot was saved, but she corralled her own rebound and knocked it home for her third of the season.
  • Kushniruk gave the Cougars a three-goal cushion with her team-leading seventh goal of the year nine minutes into the final stanza. Olivia Leggett found Kushniruk in the slot for a one-timer which beat Sank through the five-hole for Regina's second power play goal of the period.

NOTES
  • Manitoba took a 2-1 home win over Trinity Western. That result allowed the Cougars to surpass TWU for seventh place in the Canada West standings, but Regina remains three points back of the Bisons for the sixth and final postseason berth.
  • The Cougars finished 2-for-7 on the power play while killing off all six of MacEwan's opportunities.
  • Kushniruk's first goal was her first career U SPORTS shorthanded marker.
  • Kliewer's shutout was her second of the year and her fourth in her three seasons at the U of R.

NEXT UP
The Cougars will host MacEwan again on Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre. Game time is set for 5:00 PM.
