Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

MacEwan takes 7-2 Friday win over Cougars

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's men's hockey team surrendered a flurry of late goals as MacEwan took a 7-2 win over the Cougars on Friday night in Edmonton.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sean Comrie opened the scoring for MacEwan before the five-minute mark of the first period, but the Cougars had a quick answer in the form of goals by Logan Barlage and Carson Whyte just 39 seconds apart. Barlage stepped into a loose puck at the left circle and fired a shot high blocker to tie it up, then Kade Runke sprung Whyte on a breakaway and the first-year forward made no mistake for his second goal of the season.
  • Regina took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission, but MacEwan tied it up with a Carter Chorney power play goal in the second. And with just 31 seconds to go in the middle stanza, Sam Simard scored what would turn out to be the game-winning goal to put MacEwan up 3-2 heading into the third.
  • Ben Bygrove and Kadyn Chabot both scored in the third for MacEwan to put the Griffins up 5-2, and goals 32 seconds apart by Ryley Appelt and Ethan Strang - with Strang's goal coming on a penalty shot - capped the scoring for the home side.

NOTES
  • The result puts MacEwan five points up on Regina for the sixth and final Canada West postseason berth and sets up a must-win situation for the Cougars on Saturday night.
  • Kolton Shindle and Paycen Bjorklund assisted on Barlage's goal, his fourth of the season. Runke and Dylan McCabe drew the assists on Whye's goal.
  • Adam Evanoff got the start in net for Regina and made 37 saves.
  • The Cougars were 0-for-1 on the power play. MacEwan finished 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
