Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars complete impressive road sweep over No. 5 Alberta

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's basketball team followed up a big Friday win over Alberta with another one on Saturday, taking out the No. 5-ranked Pandas by a 72-63 margin in Edmonton.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • While the Cougars led from nearly wire to wire on Friday, they had to overcome an early punch from Alberta in Saturday's win. The Pandas scored 10 consecutive points in the first quarter as Jenna Harpe heated up, though a late triple by Maddy Seida helped get the Cougars back to within five as Alberta led 20-15 after the opening period.
  • Seida's triple kickstarted a 13-2 run for the Cougars, turning what had been an eight-point deficit into Regina's first lead of the game. The Cougars took a 37-35 advantage into halftime and continued to lead Alberta until the Pandas collected seven straight points late in the fourth quarter.
  • That run put the Pandas up 49-47, but the Cougars scored the final four points of the third quarter and held the lead the rest of the way. Regina didn't allow a single point in the final two minutes, getting stops on each of Alberta's final five possessions to secure the win and an impressive road sweep.

QUOTABLE
"It was a great team win tonight. We needed production from different players with some of our starters in foul trouble, and we got it. Our bench was fantastic tonight." - Cougars head coach Dave Taylor

NOTES
  • Kianna Wiens hit three three-pointers and led the Cougars with 19 points while Jade Belmore scored 11 and Cara Misskey had 10.
  • Belmore finished just shy of a double-double, tying Ryenn Schutz and Alberta's Reece Hall for the game lead with nine rebounds.
  • The Cougars have now won six consecutive games and sport a 12-4 Canada West record.
  • Saturday's win gives the Cougars their first regular season road sweep over a ranked team since Nov. 20 and Nov. 21, 2009, when they defeated No. 9 Alberta by scores of 68-64 and 80-68. The Cougars also opened up the 2018-19 Canada West schedule with a road sweep over a Calgary team which would be ranked No. 10 in the nation in the first poll of the season, which was released the Tuesday after those two games.

NEXT UP
The Cougars will now prepare for their second consecutive road weekend against a ranked team. They'll make the short trip up Highway 11 next Friday and Saturday for a pair of late-season contests against No. 1 Saskatchewan.
