The University of Regina's women's volleyball team opened up the 2024 calendar year with a home loss to No. 6-ranked Fraser Valley on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cougars trailed early in the first, but mounted a comeback and were tied with Fraser Valley as late as 18-18. The Cascades took the lead with three straight points and while Regina got the next two to make it 21-20 for UFV, the visitors took the next four points and clinched a 25-20 win with a block by Natalie Crews and Kinna Fisher.
- Fraser Valley used a similar late run to take the second set. The Cougars were within shouting distance at 16-13, but Lauren Attieh went on an extended serving run and UFV took nine of the set's final 11 points to win it 25-15.
- The Cascades continued that momentum into the third set, opening up a 9-1 lead and cruising to a 25-16 victory to clinch their 10th Canada West win of the season.
NOTES
- Lauren Attieh had a match-high 11 kills and hit .385 for Fraser Valley (10-3), while Crews finished with 5 kills and no errors on 9 attacks to register a .556 hitting percentage in the win. Gabrielle Attieh added 10 kills for UFV, while libero Emily Matsui tied for the match lead with 9 digs.
- Bailey Balaberda led Regina (0-13) in both kills and digs as she finished with 10 and 9, respectively. Cassadi Klapak dished out 22 assists and added 8 digs.
NEXT UP
The two teams will meet again in Regina on Saturday night. Match time is once again set for 6:00 PM at the CKHS.
