Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cougars drop Saturday decision to Manitoba

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's men's basketball team couldn't recover from a big second quarter from Manitoba as the Bisons took an 81-61 win over the Cougars on Saturday at the Investors Group Athletic Centre in Winnipeg.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Regina took a 14-13 lead following a slugfest in the first quarter, but Manitoba took control with a 14-2 run before halftime which featured 10 points from Daren Watts alone.
  • The Bisons extended the lead with a quick 8-0 run in the third quarter which pushed the advantage over 20 for the first time. The Bisons led by as many as 29 points in the fourth quarter before a couple of Cade Mather three-pointers sparked a late stretch for the Cougars that brought the eventual margin of victory down to 20.

NOTES
  • Watts finished with five three-pointers and scored a game-high 29 points for the Bisons, who improve to 10-2 on the season. Mason Kraus and Jonam Kazadi also scored in double figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
  • Arinze Emeka-Anyakwo led the Cougars with 12 points. Jalen Edwards scored 11, while Mather finished with 10.
  • Despite their first two losses of the Canada West schedule this weekend, the Cougars (8-2) still sit in third place in the 17-team conference standings.

NEXT UP
The Cougars will be at home to UNBC next weekend at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport. The Friday and Saturday games are both slated to tip off at 8:00 PM following the conclusion of the women's game.
