Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Cougars edged by Huskies 2-1 at Brandt Centre

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's hockey team lost 2-1 to Saskatchewan on Sunday afternoon in a U-Prairie Challenge game at the Brandt Centre.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first period, the Cougars were awarded a penalty shot early in the second after Lauren Focht was interfered with after breaking behind the U of S defence. Focht made a nice move to her backhand, but Saskatchewan goalie Colby Wilson made a blocker save to keep the score deadlocked at 0-0.
  • The game stayed scoreless until Saskatchewan scored twice in a span of 83 seconds early in the third. Sophie Lalor scored on the power play on a snap shot from the slot, then Kennedy Brown jammed the puck in following a goalmouth scramble to put the visitors up 2-0.
  • The Cougars got one back later in the period after Olivia Leggett took a pass from Kaylee Dyer in the slot and beat Wilson to get within one, but Leggett's second of the season turned out to be the final goal of the game as Saskatchewan was able to hold on for the 2-1 win.

NOTES
  • Dyer's assist was her first of the season. Rachel O'Toole drew the second helper on Leggett's goal.
  • Arden Kliewer stopped 26 of 28 shots between the pipes for Regina. Wilson made 17 saves to secure the win for the Huskies.
  • Saskatchewan finished 1-for-4 on the power play while the Cougars were scoreless on their two opportunities.

NEXT UP
The Cougars have next weekend off before returning to action on Jan. 19 and Jan. 20 against Mount Royal in Calgary.
