QUICKLY
The University of Regina's men's hockey team lost 6-1 to MacEwan on a wacky Friday night that saw the game start at the main rink in The Co-operators Centre, but finish at the Brunswick Steel sheet on the far end of the facility.
HOW IT HAPPENED - PART I
- Both teams scored once in the opening period. MacEwan's Loeden Schaufler got things started for the visitors just under four minutes in, taking advantage of a defensive breakdown by the Cougars and stepping into a slap shot from the high slot for his first goal of the campaign.
- The Cougars tied it up late in the opening frame. Blake Heward sent a shot from the point that was redirected home by Jakob Brook, giving the second-year forward his first goal of the year and sending the teams into the break tied at 1-1.
- MacEwan broke the game open with a pair of goals just over two minutes apart midway through the second. Marc Pasemko caused a turnover at the Regina blue line and quickly got the puck back before skating in and scoring what would turn out to be the game-winning goal with a shot to the blocker side. Schaufler added to the lead shortly after Pasemko's goal, giving MacEwan a 3-1 edge.
- Kadyn Chabot scored again for MacEwan, notching a power play goal with two minutes to go in the middle frame that put the Griffins up by three after 40 minutes.
ICE ISSUES
During the second intermission, one of the Zambonis carved two large chunks out of the ice in the Regina zone. After about a 25-minute delay, the call was made to move the game to Brunswick Steel, the only unoccupied rink of the six sheets at The Co-operators Centre. The teams and the nearly 200 fans in attendance made their way down to the far end of the facililty and after a brief warmup, play resumed.
HOW IT HAPPENED - PART II
- Chabot all but ended any hope of a Cougar comeback about nine minutes into the third with the first U SPORTS goal ever scored on the Brunswick Steel ice surface. Logan Dowhaniuk's initial shot was stopped, but Chabot dove to knock in the loose puck for his second of the game.
- MacEwan added one more in the late going when Ryley Appelt scored off his own rebound.
NOTES
- The Cougars had a 34-24 advantage in shots, but MacEwan goalie Eric Ward made 33 saves to help secure the Griffins' first Canada West win of the season.
- Spencer McLean had a three-assist night for MacEwan, recording helpers on Pasemko's goals and both of Chabot's tallies.
- Eric Pearce drew the second assist on Brook's goal.
