QUICKLY
Marc Pasemko's shorthanded goal in the third period lifted the MacEwan Griffins to a 2-1 win and a weekend sweep over the Regina Cougars on Saturday night in a Canada West men's hockey game at The Co-operators Centre.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- MacEwan opened up the scoring midway through the first period on rookie defenceman Carson Haynes' first Canada West goal. Pasemko found Haynes back door off a set play following a faceoff win and Haynes was able to get off a one-timer that Cougar goalie Adam Evanoff got a large piece of, but it trickled through for the game's opening goal.Â
- The score stayed 1-0 for MacEwan until well into the second period when the Cougars tied it up on the power play. Blake Heward's point shot was deflected by Turner McMillen and the rebound went right to University of Alaska Anchorage transfer Carter Belitski, who tied the game with his first goal as a Cougar.
- MacEwan took two consecutive slashing minors in the third period, but it was the Griffins that pulled into the lead. Pasemko came in on a 2-on-1 with Haynes and scored what would turn out to be the game-winning goal with a shot to the blocker side.
- The Cougars had opportunities to tie it, especially on a 4-on-3 for a minute and a half shortly after Pasemko's goal and in the two minutes at the end after Evanoff was pulled for an extra attacker, but weren't able to break through.
NOTES
- The Cougars had a 27-24 advantage in shots on Saturday. Eric Ward made 26 saves in the win for MacEwan, while Evanoff stopped 22 of MacEwan's 24 shots.
- The assist on Belitski's goal was the first career Canada West point for McMillen, who played for Kelowna and Prince Albert in the WHL before joining the Cougars this season.
NEXT UP
The Cougars will now play four straight road games, beginning with next Friday and Saturday at Manitoba. They'll then have a weekend off before travelling to Langley, B.C. for games against Trinity Western on Nov. 1 and Nov. 2.
