Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Cougars run win streak to three with shootout win over MacEwan

QUICKLY
Pippy Pritchard scored in the sixth round of a wild shootout to give the University of Regina's women's hockey team a 2-1 victory over MacEwan on Friday night in Edmonton.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • MacEwan opened up the scoring just before the midway mark of the first. Tess Collier had a shot from the point blocked but the puck bounced right to Ashton Bender, who knocked it home for her first career Canada West goal.
  • The Cougars replied five minutes later after Julianne Girardin sent a beautiful stretch pass up to Lauren Focht, who went in on a partial breakaway and buried a shot to the blocker side of MacEwan goalie Lindsey Johnson.
  • The goals by Bender and Focht turned out to be the only ones scored in regulation. The Cougars had to kill off three consecutive penalties in the second period as well as a minor midway through the third, while MacEwan was assessed a double minor for checking to the head late in the second but escaped unscathed.
  • The Cougars had the only three shots of the extra overtime session, but Johnson stopped them all and the game headed to a shootout to decide the winner.
  • MacEwan took the lead in the shootout on a goal by Sydney Jack in the second round and appeared to have won after Johnson turned aside Paige Hubbard in the third round. But the referees ruled that Johnson had left her crease before Hubbard played the puck and allowed Hubbard another attempt, which she buried to extend the shootout.
  • Neither team was able to score in the fourth or fifth rounds. Cougar goalie Arden Kliewer stopped a MacEwan attempt in the sixth round, and rookie forward Pippy Pritchard stepped up and gave Regina the win on a deke to her forehand.

NOTES
  • The Cougars (3-0-0) take over sole possession of first place in Canada West's five-team East Division, moving past idle Alberta.
  • Quinn Sutherland drew the second assist on Focht's goal, giving the rookie defender her first Canada West point.
  • Kliewer made her first start of the season and stopped 13 of MacEwan's 14 shots in the win.
  • The three-game winning streak to start the conference schedule gives the Cougars their first 3-0 start since the 2013-14 season, when they started Canada West play with five consecutive wins. The program record for most consecutive wins to start the season is nine, set back during the 1999-00 season.

NEXT UP
MacEwan will host Regina again on Saturday at the Downtown Community Arena in Edmonton. Game time is set for 5:00 PM.
