Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Cougars keep rolling with 2-0 win over Manitoba

Hubbard scores game-winning goal; Williamson records 26-save shutout

QUICKLY
The East Division-leading University of Regina's women's hockey team kept rolling on Saturday night with a 2-0 victory over the Manitoba Bisons on Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams played a scoreless opening two periods. Regina held a 10-8 shot advantage in the first, and Manitoba outshot the Cougars by a 12-9 margin in the second while the U of R had to kill off four two-minute minors in the middle frame alone.
  • The Cougars flipped the game upside down with two goals in the span of 38 seconds early in the third. The first came off a faceoff in the Manitoba zone on a play which started when Paige Hubbard had her initial shot stopped. Shaylee Scraba pounced on the rebound only to have Manitoba goalie Paige Fischer stop that as well, but Hubbard finally shovelled it in to score what would turn out to be the game-winning goal.
  • Regina went up two goals less than a minute later on an innocuous-looking play which saw Meg Farmer simply dump it from the neutral zone. One funny hop later, the puck was in the back of the net for Farmer's first U SPORTS goal and the Cougars were up 2-0.
  • Manitoba pulled their goalie Paige Fischer with just under three minutes to go, but the Bisons were whistled for a roughing minor a minute later and had to put Fischer back in the net. The Cougars spent the majority of the final two minutes in the Manitoba zone, not allowing Fischer a chance to go off for an extra attacker and sealing their fifth win in their first six Canada West games.

NOTES
  • Natalie Williamson got her third start of the season and continued her tremendous start to the 2024-25 campaign with a 26-save shutout. Williamson now leads Canada West in both goals-against average (0.33) and save percentage (.987) this season.
  • The Cougars improve their record to 5-0-1 with the win and remain in sole possession of first place in Canada West's East Division with 11 points. Alberta won again on Saturday as the Pandas stay just one point behind in second place.

NEXT UP
The Cougars will have next weekend off before returning to action on Nov. 1 and Nov. 2 against Trinity Western at The Co-operators Centre.
