QUICKLY
Turner McMillen got the University of Regina's men's hockey team started with two first-period goals and
Carson Whyte scored the game-winning goal for the Cougars in a 6-4 road win over Manitoba on Saturday night at the Wayne Fleming Arena in Winnipeg.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- McMillen's first Canada West goal came after Christian Riemer cleared the puck up the left boards. He outraced a Manitoba defender for the puck and fired a low shot from the left circle that beat Bisons goalie Braden Holt just over two minutes into the contest.
- Two shifts later, McMillen found the scoresheet again from nearly the same spot on the ice. The first-year forward one-timed an Eric Pearce pass from behind the net to the top corner, giving the Cougars an early two-goal cushion.
- Manitoba's Codey Behun drew the Bisons closer with his third goal of the weekend midway through the second, but the Cougars replied twice before the second intermission. Carson Whyte sprung Eric Houk on a partial breakaway and Houk made a move to his forehand before ripping a shot from the slot past Holt.
- Regina's fourth goal came on a beautiful passing play between Jakob Brook, Whyte, and Kade Runke which finished with a one-touch pass from Whyte to Brook for a tap-in. That gave the Cougars a 4-1 lead heading into the second intermission.
- But the outcome was far from decided. Manitoba got new life with an Evan Toth shorthanded goal early in the third, then just two minutes later Skyler Bruce scored for the Bisons to get them to within one. The Cougars were whistled for a high-sticking minor in the third and Manitoba tied it up with the power play courtesy of an Eric Alarie goal.
- Though Manitoba had all the momentum with those three consecutive goals, the Cougars scored less than a minute later. Runke slipped a pass over to Whyte for a one-timer, and though it was partially blocked by a Bisons defenceman it slipped through for what would turn out to be the game-winning goal. Belitski added an empty-net goal in the dying seconds to close out the scoring.
NOTES
- Adam Evanoff got the start in net for the Cougars and made 19 saves in the win.
- Whyte and McMillen both had three-point nights. Whyte had a goal and two assists, while McMillen scored the two first-period goals and also earned an assist on Belitski's empty netter.
- The Cougars outshot Manitoba by a 28-12 margin in the opening two periods and finished with a 37-23 shot advantage.
