Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cougars fall 6-2 to Saskatchewan in home opener

Whyte, Kesslering score for Cougars in loss

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's men's hockey team was topped 6-2 by Saskatchewan on Saturday night in the Cougars' home opener at The Co-operators Centre.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Saskatchewan opened the scoring just two minutes into the game when Logan Bairos took a feed from Chantz Petruic in the slot and buried his first Canada West goal.
  • The Cougars tied it up on the power play just minutes later. Carson Whyte drove hard to the net and was rewarded after tipping home a centering pass from Eric Houk for his first goal of the season.
  • Three minutes after Whyte's goal, Saskatchewan took the lead back with a power play goal of its own as Trevor Wong scored with Regina serving a slashing minor. And they extended the lead with Bairos scoring his second of the period, sending the Huskies into the first intermission with a 3-1 lead.
  • The Huskies scored two more in the second period to push the lead to 5-1, as Jarrett Penner scored four minutes into the middle frame before Landon Kosior added another one midway through the period. Bairos scored the sixth U of S goal on the power play late in the third, giving the rookie defenceman a hat trick.
  • The Cougars added a late one on Steven Kesslering's second goal of the weekend. Kolton Shindle had a shot from the right circle blocked, but the puck went right to Kesslering in the slot and he snapped it home.

NOTES
  • Jackson Fellner got the start in net for Regina and made 20 saves.
  • Logan Barlage, Chase Friedt-Mohr, Houk, and Shindle all registered assists for the Cougars.
  • Regina and Saskatchewan both registered 26 shots on net. The Huskies were 2-for-4 on the power play while the Cougars finished 1-for-5.

NEXT UP
The Cougars are back at home next weekend for a pair of games against MacEwan. The two teams will meet on Friday night (7:00 PM) and Saturday night (5:00 PM) at The Co-operators Centre.
