QUICKLY
Kaitlyn Gilroy scored the game's only goal and
Natalie Williamson got the shutout as the University of Regina's women's hockey team completed a season-opening weekend sweep with a 1-0 road win over Saskatchewan on Saturday night at Merlis Belsher Place in Saskatoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Saturday's game started out quietly. Both teams were able to kill off a penalty in the opening period and the Cougars held an 8-4 edge in shots. The second period was much the same, with Regina able to kill off an early minor and the Huskies outshooting Regina by a light 8-6 margin.
- Gilroy's goal finally broke the goose egg on a shot from the top of the right circle. Her shot appeared to glance off the stick of a Saskatchewan player and beat Huskies goalie Emma Backman to the blocker side.
- Saskatchewan had chances to tie it late, especially with a little under three minutes to go when Williamson made four saves in about a six-second span during a wild flurry in front of the Regina net. The Cougars also had to kill off a late tripping minor that was assessed at the end of that flurry, but successfully did so and held on for the victory.
NOTES
- Brandy West-McMaster starts her stint with wins in both of her first two Canada West games as interim head coach. Including non-conference games, her Cougars have won seven of eight games in the past month - all by a single goal.
- Williamson ended up making 23 saves as the fourth-year netminder earned her first Canada West shutout. She got the start in both wins this weekend and stopped 48 of Saskatchewan's 49 shots on goal.
- Maggie Kate Fitzpatrick got the assist on Gilroy's goal, giving the rookie forward her first Canada West point.
- The Cougars are one of two teams in Canada West's new five-team East Division to open up the year with two wins. Alberta also pulled off the weekend sweep with two wins over crosstown rival MacEwan.
NEXT UP
The Cougars will now prepare for a two-game weekend series on the road at MacEwan. They'll take on the Griffins on Friday night (7:00) and Saturday night (5:00) in Edmonton.
