Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cougars open conference schedule with road loss to Lethbridge

Pronghorns score 11 straight as part of 15-2 fourth-quarter run

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's men's basketball team opened the Canada West schedule on Friday night with a 75-62 road loss to Lethbridge.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A critical stretch of well over four minutes without a field goal for the Cougars in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference. Lethbridge went on an 11-0 run in that time, turning what had been a slim 4-point advantage into a commanding 70-55 lead with 2 minutes to go.
  • The two teams had played the first three quarters evenly until Lethbridge's game-changing late run, as the Pronghorns led 17-13 after the first and 33-29 at halftime. Ben Kamba hit a free throw to put the Cougars up 36-35 early in the third, but that would turn out to be the final lead of the game for Regina. Lethbridge went on a quick 7-0 run capped by an Angelo Mbituyimana three-pointer, and another three-pointer by Bryce Solis sent the Pronghorns into the final quarter with a seven-point lead.
  • The Cougars scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to get to within two, but that's when Lethbridge pulled away with 15 of the game's next 17 points.

NOTES
  • Mbituyiamana led all players in both points and rebounds, finishing with 18 and 14 while also collecting 9 assists to fall just short of a triple-double for Lethbridge.
  • Christian Tabiri led Regina with 14 points. Kamba also hit double figures with 12.
  • Arinze Emeka-Anyakwo and Kaz Dornstauder both had six rebounds for the Cougars.
  • Emeka-Anyakwo, Kamba, Tabiri, Lodie Kenyi, and Jamie White were the U of R's starting five. Jordan Persad came off the bench to play 28 minutes and led the Cougars with 4 assists.
  • Samuel Nkassa played his first Canada West game, scoring three points in four minutes on the floor.
