Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars earn weekend split with Saturday win over Lethbridge

Belmore picks up 22 points, 8 rebounds in win

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's basketball team took a 70-64 road win over Lethbridge on Saturday to finish with a weekend split in their Canada West season-opening weekend against the Pronghorns.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The U of R responded to a 13-point loss on Friday in a big way on Saturday in the opening quarter. Lethbridge got the opening bucket of the game, but six different players scored to help the Cougars reel off a 15-2 run, taking a lead that they would never relinquish.
  • Regina's lead ballooned to 20 after the Cougars scored the first 9 points of the second quarter, a run which put them up 30-10. But Lethbridge hung around, with the Pronghorns cutting the lead to 38-27 at halftime.
  • The Cougars looked poised to cruise to victory down the stretch after taking a 61-44 lead into the fourth, but the offence dried up in the final quarter and Lethbridge took advantage with a 15-4 run that got the Pronghorns to within six points with three and a half minutes to go. But that was as close as Lethbridge got, and the Cougars were able to put together a couple of late defensive stops to finish off with a six-point victory.

NOTES
  • Jade Belmore finished as the game's leading scorer with 22 points and also added 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 steals for the Cougars.
  • Rachel Vanderhooft and Cara Misskey both hit double figures in scoring with 13 points and 12 points, respectively. Vanderhooft also tied Belmore with a team-leading eight rebounds.
  • Courtney McKee led Lethbridge with 14 points.

NEXT UP
The Cougars will prepare for their home openers next weekend against Brandon. They'll host the Bobcats starting at 6:00 PM on both Friday night and Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
