Cougars open Wesmen Classic with quarterfinal win over Brandon

Jade Belmore's 23 points and 9 rebounds helped power the University of Regina's women's basketball team to a 76-40 win over Brandon on Saturday in a Wesmen Classic quarterfinal matchup in Winnipeg.

BRACKET
  • The Cougars join Winnipeg, Guelph, and Fraser Valley on the winner's side after Day 1.
  • Tournament host Winnipeg will play Guelph with a trip to the Wesmen Classic final on the line. The Cougars will match up with Fraser Valley in the other semifinal.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars and Fraser Valley will meet on Sunday night in Winnipeg in the second tournament semifinal. Game time is set for 8:00 PM at the Duckworth Centre.
  • Sunday's game will be the first meeting between the Cougars and the Cascades since UFV's 62-53 win in the quarterfinals of last season's Canada West Postseason Tournament in Abbotsford, B.C. The two teams aren't scheduled to meet in conference play this year.

HISTORY
  • The Cougars are competing in the Wesmen Classic for the fourth time. They also participated in 1985-86, 1988-89, and 2018-19.
  • The U of R's top finish in the non-conference tournament came during their most recent appearance with wins over Algoma, Lakehead, and Winnipeg giving them top spot at the eight-team event.
