Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cougars likely to finish as No. 6 seed after Saturday loss to Winnipeg

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's men's basketball team finished the Canada West schedule with an 85-76 home loss to Winnipeg on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

POSTSEASON IMPLICATIONS
  • The loss likely puts the Cougars into the Canada West Postseason Tournament as the No. 6 seed in the single-elimination bracket, though they could rise to fifth in the unlikely event of heavily favoured Victoria losing twice at home to Thompson Rivers next weekend.
  • If Regina ends up as the No. 6 seed, the Cougars will play No. 11 Fraser Valley in an opening-round game on Wednesday, Feb. 21 at the University of Manitoba. The winner of that game would advance to the quarterfinals against the No. 3 seed, which would be this same Winnipeg squad.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars burst out of the gate with the game's first nine points, but Winnipeg quickly got back into it with a 12-2 run that helped the visitors take a 21-17 lead after the opening quarter.
  • Winnipeg never trailed again after a huge second quarter which saw the visitors outscore Regina by a 28-16 margin. The Wesmen led 49-33 at halftime and enjoyed a double-digit advantage for almost the entire second half. Winnipeg held a 19-point cushion at one point in the fourth quarter and while the Cougars gave themselves a brief glimmer of hope after back-to-back triples by Arinze Emeka-Anyakwo and Nick Barnard got them to within 11, that was as close as they'd get until the final seconds of the contest.

NOTES
  • Nick Barnard led the Cougars (13-7) with 19 points while Matt Barnard had 10 points and 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double. Emeka-Anyakwo finished with 15 points while Lodie Kenyi scored 12.
  • Matt Barnard, Nick Barnard, Hayden Collier, and Luke Harold were all honoured as part of Senior Night festivities prior to the game. Harold and both Barnards were starters on Saturday, but Collier didn't suit up due to injury.
  • Shawn Maranan led Winnipeg (15-5) with 19 points and 9 assists.
