QUICKLY
The No. 10-ranked University of Regina's women's basketball team wrapped up its conference schedule on Saturday night with its second win in as many nights over Winnipeg, taking a 63-55 victory over the Wesmen at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
POSTSEASON IMPLICATIONS
The win locks Regina (15-5) into the No. 5 seed for the Canada West Postseason Tournament. The Cougars will take on No. 12-seeded Manitoba on Wednesday, Feb. 21 in an opening-round game with the winner advancing to the quarterfinals where they'll take on tournament host and No. 4 seed Fraser Valley.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Saturday's game started out as a bit of a rock fight with the two teams combining for just 13 points in the opening quarter. And the second quarter wasn't exactly an offensive display either. Winnipeg outscored Regina by a 14-12 margin in the period, sending the Wesmen into halftime with a 20-19 lead.
- The offences finally got moving after the break. Winnipeg built up what would be its largest lead of the game as they went up by six in the first half of the third quarter, but the Cougars broke through with a huge 15-2 run that started with three-pointers by Cara Misskey and Dayna Pearce on back-to-back possessions. Regina scored all 15 points during that run off triples, with Maddy Seida draining one before the Cougars got two more from Jade Belmore.
- Regina took a 44-37 lead into the fourth quarter. Winnipeg threatened late after a triple by Raia Guinto made it a four-point game with a little over three minutes to go, but the Cougars answered immediately with another Belmore three and then got buckets by Kianna Wiens and Ryenn Schutz on the next two possessions to push the lead into double digits.
NOTES
- Belmore and Pearce were both on fire from the outside, combining for 9 of the U of R's 12 three-pointers. Belmore was 4-for-5 from three and led all players with 20 points, while Pearce hit five of her eight three-point attempts and finished with 15.
- Cara Misskey added eight points, five rebounds, and four assists while Ryenn Schutz had seven points and nine rebounds.
- Belmore had a game-high 12 rebounds to collect her second consecutive double-double and her fifth double-double of the Canada West schedule.
- Anna Kernaghan led Winnipeg with 18 points.
