Wesmen take three-set Friday win over Cougars

QUICKLY
The University of Winnipeg Wesmen picked up a crucial three-set victory over the Regina Cougars on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport in Regina.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Winnipeg took control of the first set with five straight early points with Selva Planincic on serve. The Wesmen never trailed in the set after that run, cruising to a 25-18 victory to take the early lead in the match.
  • The second set saw Winnipeg hit .281 as a team as the Wesmen went on early 4-0 and 6-1 runs to jump out to a 12-6 lead. The Cougars went on a late 4-1 rally but it was too little, too late as a Regina service error clinched a 25-19 victory for the Wesmen.
  • Winnipeg again bolted out to an early lead in the third set, jumping ahead 9-2 to force a Regina timeout. The Cougars had their best stretch of the game with a 12-4 run which turned a 19-10 Winnipeg lead into a slim 23-22 advantage, but the Wesmen got a kill from Grace Vallis and a Regina hitting error to clinch the three-set victory.

NOTES
  • Winnipeg improves to 9-14 with the win as the Wesmen continue to battle for one of the two remaining Canada West playoff berths.
  • Christine Kolbuck led Winnipeg offensively with 11 kills and no errors on 17 attacks, giving her a blistering .647 hitting percentage in the win.
