Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars' season ends with setback to Fraser Valley

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's basketball team's season ended with a 62-53 loss to Fraser Valley on Thursday night in a Canada West quarterfinal in Abbotsford, B.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cara Misskey scored the game's opening bucket on a nice take that saw her make an acrobatic move to get around a UFV defender in the paint, but that would turn out to be Regina's only lead of the game.
  • The Cascades led 14-9 after a low-scoring opening quarter and UFV pulled ahead for good with an 11-0 run that broke a 23-23 tie with four minutes to go in the first half. Dayna Pearce hit a three-pointer for Regina at the buzzer to end the run as Fraser Valley took a 34-26 lead into the break.
  • UFV scored the first eight points of the third quarter on a run that started with a Nikki Cabuco triple. That run put the Cascades up by 16 and the Cougars scored seven straight to bring the lead back down to single digits, but UFV brought a 47-36 lead into the fourth quarter and the Cascades were able to hang on to that advantage down the stretch.
  • The Cougars made it a two-possession game by getting to within six points on three different occasions in the fourth quarter, but each time UFV was able to respond. Cabuco's two free throws with 41 seconds to go put the Cascades up by eight, all but closing the door on a late Regina comeback.

NOTES
  • Fraser Valley's Maddy Gobeil led all players in scoring and had the game's only double-double, finishing with 22 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Jade Belmore led the Cougars in scoring, finishing with 14 points and 9 rebounds to go along with 5 assists.
  • Kianna Wiens finished with 10 points for Regina while Rachel Vanderhooft scored 7 and Pearce and Kyu Fust both had 6.
  • The win was UFV's first postseason victory against the Cougars. Regina had won each of the first four postseason matchups between the two teams.
