Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Huskies pull away from Cougars in fourth for Saturday win

QUICKLY
The Saskatchewan Huskies pulled away from the Regina Cougars down the stretch for a 71-62 Canada West men's basketball win on Saturday night in Saskatoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars led for the majority of the contest until a fourth-quarter drought tipped the game in favour of Saskatchewan.
  • Regina led by as many as nine in the first quarter and took a 23-16 lead into the second. Saskatchewan battled back and took its first lead of the game on an Emmanuel Bonsu triple just past the midway point of the period, but the Cougars closed the half on a 9-2 run and led 34-29 at the break.
  • The Cougars never trailed in the third quarter, though Saskatchewan tied it up on four separate occasions. The game-changing run started after Cade Mather's layup with a minute to go in the third, which were Regina's final points until Mather hit a three-pointer four and a half minutes into the fourth. In that time, Saskatchewan scored 13 unanswered points to take the lead for good.
  • Bonsu hit another three-pointer with a minute to go that put Saskatchewan up by six, and the Cougars weren't able to convert on their ensuing opportunities to cut into the lead.

NOTES
  • Hayden Collier had a huge 10-point first quarter and finished with a team-leading 12 points. Mather finished with 10 points, while both Nick Barnard and Lodie Kenyi scored 9.
  • Mather also added 10 rebounds, giving him his first career Canada West double-double.
  • The Cougars (13-5) remain No. 3 in Canada West's RPI metric, which is used to seed teams for the conference postseason tournament.

NEXT UP
Regina finishes off the Canada West schedule next weekend with home games against Winnipeg on Friday and Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport. The teams will head into the weekend series with identical 13-5 conference records.
