Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Wesmen open weekend with win over Cougars

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's men's basketball team fell behind early on Friday night and never recovered, dropping an 80-62 decision to Winnipeg in a Canada West game at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Winnipeg led 19-14 after the first quarter and held the Cougars without a field goal for the final three and a half minutes of the second, helping the Wesmen go into halftime with a 42-34 lead.
  • The game's most pivotal run went in Winnipeg's favour in the third quarter. Lodie Kenyi hit a triple for Regina that brought the Cougars to within four, but the Wesmen replied with a huge 17-0 run that put the visitors up 62-41 late in the third.
  • Winnipeg enjoyed a 20-point cushion for the majority of the fourth quarter, helping them cruise to their 14th Canada West victory of the season.

NOTES
  • Winnipeg (14-5) was led by four players scoring in double figures in points, including Malachi Alexander (18), Alberto Gordo (13), Mikhail Mikhailov (12), and Shawn Maranan (11).
  • Arinze Emeka-Anyakwo led the Cougars (13-6) with 16 points. Matt Barnard had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
  • Winnipeg moves to No. 4 in Canada West's RPI metric with the win, while Regina falls to No. 5. Though it depends heavily on the out-of-town scoreboard, it's entirely possible that Saturday's rematch between the Cougars and the Wesmen decides which team gets a top-four seed (and a first-round bye) for the conference postseason tournament.

NEXT UP
The Cougars close out their Canada West schedule on Saturday night against Winnipeg. Game time is scheduled for 8:00 PM, though Senior Night festivities will almost certainly push that start back a bit.
