Game Recap: Rams Football |

No. 10 Rams fall to second in Canada West standings after loss to UBC

QUICKLY
Two fourth-quarter turnovers sunk the No. 10-ranked University of Regina Rams on Saturday afternoon in a 14-12 home loss to the UBC Thunderbirds at Mosaic Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UBC's first two offensive plays went for a total of 53 yards and the Thunderbirds finished a quick 6-play, 75-yard opening drive with a Derek Engel touchdown from a yard out to take an early lead.
  • The Rams had an equally impressive first drive of the game. They converted on two third-and-short situations with Christian Katende under centre, and made good on a third third-down gamble as Noah Pelletier took it in himself from three yards out for the major. The touchdown drive was 13 plays and 81 yards and took 7:26 off the clock.
  • Those two touchdowns and a pair of Isaac Wegner rouges were the only points of the first half as the Rams took a 9-7 lead into the break.
  • Regina opened the second half just as they opened the first, with a prolonged scoring drive. This one was 13 plays and went a total of 73 yards over 7:13 and finished with an Isaac Wegner field goal from 20 yards out, putting the Rams up 12-7.
  • UBC took the lead for good on a seven-yard touchdown rush by Dane Kapler early in the fourth quarter. Cameron Mah's sack prevented the two-point conversion, but Kieran Flannery-Fleck blasted the ensuing kickoff for a rouge to put the Thunderbirds up 14-12.
  • The Rams went two-and-out on their next possession and had both of their next two drives ended by fumbles. One play after Pelletier found Marshall Erichsen for a 36-yard completion to get well into UBC territory, the Thunderbirds' Deacon Sterna had a strip sack which was picked up by Jaxon Ciraolo-Brown to give the ball back to the visitors. The Rams forced UBC to a two-and-out and were again into Thunderbirds territory after an Erichsen rush, but UBC's Aaron Parker jarred the ball loose from Rams running back Jevon Garwood and Bear Akachuk pounced on it with just over two minutes to go.
  • UBC's Garrett Rooker had back-to-back 11-yard completions for first downs and after a great directional punt by Flannery-Fleck, the Rams didn't get the ball back until with just 32 seconds to go and on their own 5-yard line. UBC's defence did the rest, and an incompletion on 3rd-and-8 sealed the win for the Thunderbirds.

NOTES
  • Despite the loss, the Rams (2-1) sit in sole possession of second place in the Canada West standings. Manitoba leads the way at 3-0 while Alberta, UBC, Calgary, and Saskatchewan are all 1-2.
  • UBC's Isaiah Knight rushed for 103 yards and also caught 3 passes for 12 yards to finish with a game-high 115 all-purpose yards. Rooker finished 21-for-32 and threw for 243 passing yards, with Sam Davenport and Shemar McBean both tying for the team lead with 4 catches.
  • Garwood rushes for a career-high 65 yards. Pelletier was 19-for-33 and finished with 181 yards, while Nicholas Sirleaf had a game-high 5 receptions for a total of 39 yards. Emmett Steadman caught 3 passes for a team-leading total of 46 yards.
  • Mah and Tarick Polius both had sacks for the Rams defence. Mah also had a pass breakup, while Max Polischuk's second interception of the season was the lone pick of Saturday's contest. Toryn Swystun-Bernes deflected a pass at the line to notch Regina's other pass breakup.

NEXT UP
After two straight home games, the Rams will now play two consecutive away games beginning next Friday night against Alberta (1-2).
