Cougars drop road decision to MacEwan

Hannah Harper scores hat trick for Griffins

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's soccer team suffered a 5-0 road loss to MacEwan on Saturday at the Scottish Dome in Edmonton.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • MacEwan opened the scoring in the 23rd minute. Peyton Enns was assessed a yellow card for fouling a player just outside the box, which gave the Griffins a free kick in a dangerous location. Hannah Harper lifted it over the wall and in, giving the Griffins an early lead.
  • Harper scored again in the 33rd minute, heading in a nice cross from the right courtesy of Anneke Odinga to put MacEwan up 2-0.
  • MacEwan's two-goal lead stayed intact through halftime and up until the 80th minute when the Griffins scored again. Brenna Paquin scored on a shot from distance, lifting one over Regina keeper Kareena Andersen to end any hope of a late comeback.
  • MacEwan capped the scoring with two late goals. Harper scored on a penalty kick to complete the hat trick, then Paige Colby added another in injury time.

NOTES
  • The Cougars fall to 3-4-0 with the loss and now sit four points back of Alberta for the fourth and final Prairie Division playoff berth thanks to the Pandas' 0-0 draw with Saskatchewan.
  • Andersen was credited with 13 saves for the Cougars as MacEwan enjoyed an 18-4 advantage in shots on goal during the match.
  • Kirsten Koellmel recorded three of the U of R's four shots on net.

NEXT UP
Regina will now prepare for a pivotal matchup against Alberta on Sunday needing a win to pull to within a point of the Pandas for fourth place in the division. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 PM at Foote Field in Edmonton.
