Cougars open 2024 with home win over Alberta

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's soccer team opened up 2024 on a winning note as the Cougars held off the Alberta Pandas for a 2-1 victory on Saturday in a Canada West match at the U of R Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars' first goal of the season started on a nice through ball from Lennox Lockhurst up to Kirsten Koellmel. Koellmel then sent a cross into the box which was expertly placed for Peyton Enns, who chipped it home to put the Cougars ahead in the 31st minute.
  • The score stayed that way until a quick outburst in the second half. A breakdown defensively in the 57th minute led to Alberta's Wanda Czebreszuk sending a pass over to Adrienne Poulin, who tapped it into a wide-open net to knot the game at 1-1.
  • The Cougars replied immediately, striking just 17 seconds after the kickoff following Poulin's goal. Delaney Rhinehart embarked on a solo raid up the right side and tried to send the ball towards the net, but it deflected right to a wide-open Emma Davidson who scored what would turn out to be the game-winning strike.

NOTES
  • Kareena Andersen got the start in net and made four saves to secure her fifth career victory.
  • Enns' goal was her 12th as a Cougar, pulling her into a tie with Kyra Vibert for third place on the U of R's all-time scoring list.
  • Two Cougars played in their first Canada West games on Saturday. Zoya Kim got the start and played 45 minutes, while Mikaela De Luca came on in the 86th minute to help seal the win.
  • After missing two full seasons recovering from a serious injury, Zoe Icton played 28 minutes in the victory.
  • Centre back Makenna Sackmann played all 90 minutes and was named the match MVP for the Cougars.

QUOTABLE
"I think right now we feel confident against any opponent. We're buying into our game model and it was a fantastic, total team win today. We knew that U of A were going to overload us in the middle and we knew how to problem solve that, and the players trusted us with the game plan. It was a proud moment today." - Cougars head coach Astrid Baecker

NEXT UP
The Cougars are right back at home on Sunday against their second consecutive Alberta-based opponent as they'll square off against MacEwan (0-0-1) at noon. Alberta will make the trip up Highway 11 to meet Saskatchewan (0-0-1).
