Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Balanced attack leads Cougars to win over MacEwan

Kenyi scores 18, pulls down 10 rebounds to notch double-double in victory

QUICKLY
Five players scored in double figures as the University of Regina's men's basketball team took an 81-74 win over MacEwan on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a tight first quarter which saw the two teams trade leads six times, the Cougars were able to build up a double-digit lead in the second. But Jamie White's basket with a little over three minutes to go would be Regina's final score of the half, and MacEwan went on an 8-0 run in that time to cut the U of R's lead to 37-35 at the break.
  • Searching for their second Canada West win of the year, the Griffins immediately hit a triple to start the third quarter which put them back in front. That was the first of six third-quarter lead changes before the Cougars went on an 11-2 run which put them into the lead for good.
  • The Cougars took a 59-52 advantage into the fourth and led by at least five throughout the entire final period. MacEwan got to within six points after a Justace Byam jumper with a little over a minute and a half to go, but Arinze Emeka-Anyakwo answered on the next possession with a bucket of his own. A key stop by the Cougars in the form of a Christian Tabiri steal all but sealed the win for Regina.

NOTES
  • Lodie Kenyi led the parade of double-digit scorers for Regina, scoring a game-high 18 points while also pulling down 10 rebounds to secure a double-double.
  • White had 16 points while Ben Kamba had 15, Emeka-Anyakwo had 11, and Tabiri finished with 10. Zachary Hillis just missed joining out on the party, finishing with nine points which included a ridiculous three-pointer at the end of the first quarter on a 75-foot heave from in front of the MacEwan's bench.
  • Job Janda and Milan Jaksic both had 16 points for MacEwan (1-8).

PLAYOFF PICTURE
  • The Cougars (6-5) continue to occupy sixth place in Canada West's Prairie Division. They're lurking just one game behind fifth-place Mount Royal (7-4) while sitting three wins up on both Alberta (3-6) and Brandon (3-8).
  • If the postseason started today, the Cougars would be assigned the conference's No. 11 seed and head to Vancouver to play Winnipeg in an opening-round game. The winner would advance to the quarterfinals against UBC.

NEXT UP
Regina and MacEwan will play on Saturday night following the conclusion of the women's game. Game time is scheduled for 8:00 PM at the CKHS.
