Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars kick off 2025 with win over MacEwan

Belmore scores 23, adds 9 rebounds

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's basketball team opened the new calendar year with a 77-43 victory over MacEwan on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

NOTES
  • Jade Belmore again led the Cougars in scoring, pouring in 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting while also collecting 9 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 thefts in the win.
  • Brenna Metz had a strong game off the bench for Regina. The fourth-year wing was 6-for-9 from the field and hit all 3 of her three-point attempts, trailing only Belmore with 15 points and also grabbing 5 rebounds.
  • Izzi Fust and Cara Misskey also hit double figures in scoring for the Cougars. Fust had 14 points and 7 rebounds, while Misskey chipped in with 13 points.
  • Josie Valley hit two free throws and was good from three on her only attempt from the field as the rookie guard matched her season high with five points.
  • The Cougars have now won five consecutive Canada West games over MacEwan. The Griffins' last (and only) conference win over Regina was back on Nov. 12, 2016 in Edmonton.

PLAYOFF PICTURE
  • The Cougars continue to lead Canada West's Prairie Division, sitting with a 9-2 record ahead of both Saskatchewan and Alberta with 7-2 conference marks.
  • Those three teams, along with Calgary (6-3) and Mount Royal (7-4), are all in contention for a top-two finish in the division. The Prairie's top two teams are guaranteed to host on Canada West's opening playoff weekend, which will feature a neutral-site opening-round game with the host playing the winner of that matchup in a quarterfinal.

NEXT UP
The two teams will close out the weekend set on Saturday night at the CKHS. Tip-off is again set for 6:00 PM.
