U of R completes weekend sweep over MacEwan

Cougars hold Griffins pointless in second quarter as part of 40-2 run

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's basketball team had a slow start, but the Cougars erupted in the second quarter and coasted to a 70-34 victory over MacEwan on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

SECOND-QUARTER SHUTOUT
  • The two teams struggled to a combined 23 points in the opening period as the Cougars took a 12-11 lead through 10 minutes, but the Cougars made a little history in the second.
  • The U of R defence didn't allow a single point in the second quarter. The Cougars forced five turnovers in the period and held MacEwan to 0-for-14 from the field while scoring 26 points of their own, turning what had been a one-point lead heading into the second into a 27-point advantage at the break.
  • Regina also scored the final three points of the first quarter and 11 of the first 13 points in the third, meaning that the Cougars went on a 40-2 run over 15 minutes of game play.

NOTES
  • Jade Belmore and Cara Misskey led the Cougars with 18 points and 17 points, respectively. Belmore also added a game-high five assists.
  • Maddy Seida was 3-for-4 from three-point range and finished with 12 points in 19 minutes on the floor.
  • Izzi Fust had eight points and eight rebounds.
  • The Cougars (10-2) continue to hold down first place in Canada West's Prairie Division but are closely trailed by Saskatchewan and Alberta, both at 8-2.

NEXT UP
The Cougars have next weekend off before returning to action on Jan. 24 and Jan. 25 at home against Winnipeg.
